The Talented Mister Gross

Everybody think Alex Gross (1968) is an amazing and talented illustrator. And he is. There are a lot of influences in his art. From Renaissance to Japanese advertising.

Alex graduated in 1990 from Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California.

“His earliest artistic influences were comic books and movies especially the strong visuals from science fiction television and films like Star Trek and later Star Wars.”

About his influences he recognizes :

“…the great Japanese artist and designer Shinohara Katsuyuki. He is one of my favorite artists ever.”

And other artists like:

“…Aron Wiesenfeld, Jeff Soto, James Jean and Ben Marra are a few of my favorite young guns…”

In the year 2000, he received a fellowship from the Japan Foundation. And that changed his artistic life. He describes the experience of Japan:

“…The Blade Runner vision of the future was smacking me over the head, and I was not prepared for it.”

This trip showed him the stethical approach to the art of Japanese culture and he took mostly from advertising and vintage pictures, all the imagery that it will be present in his art the next years.

His inspiration comes from many sources, even Russian and British Art (read the article about inspiration I wrote):

“I absolutely love old photos and vintage pictures. The Victorian Era is the time when I would have liked to live.”

His work have been published by Taschen in 2004 under the title Japanese Beauties. In 2007, Chronicle books published The Art of Alex Gross, a monograph featuring Alex’s painting, drawing and printmaking from 1999 through 2007.

He had been classified as a Pop Surrealist or Surreal Pop artist.

He mixes the images in a dream like reality.

“…this whole idea of freely mixing imagery that doesnt normally go together was really exciting to me.”

The creative process of Alex Gross begins with an image as a main inspiration, then he sketches in the computer. And the final artwork is hand made on traditional painting.

“Often, the genesis of a painting for me will be finding an image like that one, which really inspires me to take it and do something with it. I have borrowed imagery from gothic artists like Rogier Van der Weyden a

ll the way to modern artists like Shinohara, Yokoo Tadanoori and George Tooker, to name a few. These days i tend to use mostly images that I find in old photographs.”

“All of my gallery work is either Oil paint or mixed media, which include oils, acrylics and some collage. I do use the computer quite a lot in the sketch phase. But in the finished product it is not really being used.”

And finally he has an advice for illustrators and it is a principle for everybody in the creative field:

“I dont really have advice for illustrators other than to say develop your own personal voice as best you can, and people will be drawn to it if it is real, it is you, and it is creative.”

The Wild and Tender Photography of Rodolphe Simeon

Rodolphe Simeon is a french photographer living in Canada. And this is not the only thing mixing cultures in his life: he speaks French, English and German.

The first time I saw his pictures was in the brazilian magazine Zupi,which I recommend to read or at least to visit its site. They defined his work as bizarre, agressive and violent. And that is true. Just take a look at the series of Street or the M-People and you have to agree with them: scissors, blood, abnormalities, sexuality and violence. A dangerous and attractive mix.

How did he begin with photography?

“In Oct 2005, I saw the documentary movie “War Photographer” about James Nachtwey. I was so in shock after it, that I immediately decided to go to the store to buy my first camera.”

He says he is influenced by classical paintings from Renaissance to the 19th century, with artist like Da Vinci, Jacques-Louis David, Wermer, Rembrandt, and Carabaggio.
About their favorites photographers he said:

“Almost all of my favorite photographers are photojournalists— James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Salgado, Larry Burrows, Bruce Davidson, Leonard Freed…” And he adores Olivero Toscani and David LaChapelle.

The process of taking pictures is about randomness and to pull people to show their instincts off.

“I will go for a walk on the streets with no major plans nor goals”; “I have to say that some of my photos were taken in really short meetings”; “I let my intuition decide which way is the best”; “I try to catch the soul of people”; “During a photo shoot, I see things in people”; “I prefer to not think too much in order to let my intuition and feelings lead the process.”; “My role is to push models in different directions and to see how they react”.

About the technical process of photography, he said:

“I use Lightroom to transform RAW files to PSD. I don’t do any processing with Lightroom (not even the White balance). I do the entire post-processing in Photoshop.” Take mental notes for your next work.

About the differences between the street and the staged photography he states:

“The basics to my street photography are: 1) you do not decide on the context, and 2) you are constantly making quick decisions to produce powerful photos. My studio work starts by improvised movements or feelings.”; “ In the street or in studio, I try to take emotional pictures.”

The series M-People is clearly about violence. M-People means “Makeup-People”. He said about M-People:

“It’s a series about identity.”; “I use a lot of violence in my photography in order to maintain the identity of people.”; “People really love to mimic violence and murder.” “In today’s world, I see humanity completely lost.”; “For example, through Myspace, Facebook, Flickr, etc… people invent an identity for themselves everyday.”

He is very popular in Flickr.com, but he thinks is not the way to became an artist:

“A lot of people make that mistake; they think that being popular on the web will help them become successful with their art. From my point of view, it doesn’t work that way.”

About the topic of manipulated images he thinks that

“The photographer is constantly censoring his or her own work, and filtering reality to achieve a vision”. Ergo (in english, then), there is no real difference between an untouched picture and a manipulated one.

And finally I am gonna leave you a gift for your soul. He told a story about a thing I understand as a key in art: Be yourself no matter what you are.

“I once photographed a man whose face was seriously deformed. When I asked him if I could take his picture, he agreed immediately. As I went from looking at him directly, to looking at him through my camera, I was overwhelmed by his absolute self-confidence. He was completely himself, completely honest and sincere. At this moment, I felt that he changed something inside me profoundly. In a way, he showed me how you can exist by just being yourself.”

The fascinating anime of Hayao Miyazaki

Maybe the name of Hayao Miyazaki is unknow to your ears and eyes, because it is a little bit hard to remember the sounds and spelling of japanese language. This article is trying to put in your memory the name of Hayao Miyazaki.

Hayao Miyazaki (1941) is a filmmaker and cofounder of Studio Ghibli (animation production). When he was young drew airplanes for Miyazaki Airplane, a enterprise owned by Hayao Miyazaki’s uncle and developed a lifelong fascination with aviation and flying machines, a recurrent theme on his films.

In April 1963, Miyazaki got a job at Toei Animation. He played an important role as chief animator, concept artist, and scene designer.

Miyazaki co-founded the animation production company Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata in 1985.

For Television, in 1974 Mizayaki created the scene design and layout of Heidi, girl of the Alps. This anime serie is based on Heidi of Johanna Spyri. Miyazaki directed six episodes of Sherlock Hound, an Italian-Japanese co-production which retold Sherlock Holmes tales. These episodes were first broadcast in 1984-85.

He was widely known with the film Princess Mononoke, but he had a long time directing movies: The Castle of Cagliostro, 1979; Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, 1984; Castle in the Sky, 1986; My Neighbor Totoro, 1988; Kiki’s Delivery Service, 1989; Porco Rosso, 1992; Princess Mononoke, 1997; Spirited Away, 2001 (winner, Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, 2002); Howl’s Moving Castle, 2004 (nominee, Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, 2005); and Ponyo, 2008.

I strongly recommend you to watch the movies with a lot of attention to the details. It was amazing for me to pause the movie and see every detail of the room of the wizard in Howl’s Moving Castle, with tons of amulets hanging in the walls and ceiling. Or be scared with the demon snakes on the film the Princess Mononoke, which by the way, is a mix between traditional animation (hand-draw) and computer graphics. Since Princess Mononoke to Ponyo Mizayaki used the mixed techniques and now he had shifted to traditional animation only.

As The Guardian said:” In the past he has been vocal in his criticism of computer-generated imagery, describing it as “thin, shallow, fake”. These days he seems to have made his peace with the beast. He admits that he likes Toy Story because it opened the doors to a new breed of animation and even admits to using CGI in his own movies (but never more than 10% of the finished print). “Actually I think CGI has the potential to equal or even surpass what the human hand can do,” he says. “But it is far too late for me to try it.”

This article is about a topic very interesting, but sometimes a little bit dark. This is just a first step in the long way of the knowledge. Please, visit the links and read for yourself all the information there.

The copyright is a form of protection for original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture, fixed in a tangible medium of expression.

Copyright protects original works of authorship, while a patent protects inventions or discoveries. Ideas and discoveries are not protected by the copyright law, although the way in which they are expressed may be. A trademark protects words, phrases, symbols, or designs identifying the source of the goods or services of one party and distinguishing them from those of others. ( http://www.copyright.gov/ )

Although there are efforts in order to protect the copyright throughout the world, there is no such thing as a “international copyright”. It means that we must protect our copyright following the law of our country and then to protect the copyright according to the law of the country where we are gonna do businesses.

But… why is it so? Because all the treaties just have the binding of the law once they are suscribed and ratified by the countries (or parties).

And then the question is: Where do I have to register my work?

In United States, copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. And if you want to do businesses in Italy, it is recommended to register your work in the States first. That is strongly recommended in the document named Intellectual Property Rights (IPRI) Toolkit for Italy of the US Commerce Service. By the way, the United Stated Trade Representatives has consistenly listed Italy in the on its Special 301 Watch List or Priority Watch List. In Italy, the author of any original intellectual work is protected even if without registration. If you want to do businesses in United States, it is recommended to register your work. Any work that is protected by U.S. copyright law can be registered. This includes many works of foreign origin. Works that are first published in the United States or in a country with which United States have a copyright treaty or that are created by a citizen or domiciliary of a country with which United States have a copyright treaty are also protected and may therefore be registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.

As a conclusion:
The United States law the copyright exists since the work is created, but it has a lot of benefits the proper registration, which is a international advise in most countries, even those who are not subscribing international treaties in the matter of copyright.

Use always a copyright notice in your artwork, even in your website.

How to get inspired: Go back to the Origins

Sometimes it is really hard to get inspired. There is too much information and we usually feel we are not creating nothing new. That is the way Internet changed our lives, making us feel everything we can do is just to make efforts to recreate something.

I want to give you a simple advise: Go back to the origins.

When I was creating the article about the history of Illustration, I was thinking a lot about all the people who were designing and illustrating with rudimentary tools. No internet. No Photoshop. No computers. They just had imagination and inspiration to work.

There was a whole age, of the Greeks (“Keep good relations with the Greecians.” — George W. Bush, as quoted in The Economist, April 9, 1999) and Roman Empire, who inspires the Occidental civilization. In art, they came back with the Neoclassicism in the midth of the 18th century. The art is always growing and evolving feeding from recreated sources.

Go back to the origins means looking back for the sources (in our case, in art), and recreate inspired by the aesthetic look. That is all. I was surfing the web up and down, looking for the images for the article of the history of illustration and I felt inspired for every single image I was collecting.

But now, I donÂ´t want to recommend you to visit Flickr or other sites with talented artist, like Behance.net. I am inviting you to go to the real sources: illuminated manuscripts; old books; ephemeras; advertising from 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries; medical illustration, newspapers, etc.

If you have some time, visit your library and check the old books they have there. Check the old newspapers, magazines and all the printed paper there. Visit the museums. Search for new (old) typography. You must check the work of Igino Marini with the Fell Types directly on his web http://iginomarini.com/fell/

And finally: Please…Leave your computerÂ¡

If you donÂ´t have enough time… well, take your computer again and go to internet.

This time, I am glad to introduce you the British Library and Wellcome Images. You donÂ´t have to travel to Britain, of course. They are just a second away. From the profane to the sacred, from the art to the science. The collection of the British Library includes over 150 million items, in most known languages, including manuscripts, maps, newspapers, magazines, prints and drawings, music scores, and patents. Wellcome Images is one of the world’s richest and most unique collections, with themes ranging from medical and social history to contemporary healthcare and biomedical science, containing â€œhistorical images from the Wellcome Library collections, Tibetan Buddhist paintings, ancient Sanskrit manuscripts written on palm leaves, beautifully illuminated Persian books and much moreâ€.

Angels from La Recoleta Cemetery

The air is full of the smell of gingerbread and pines. It is Christmas time. The angels and Papa Noel or Santa are everywhere.
I want to show you a bunch of angels. With a twist: Angels from a Cemetery. Of course I am thinking in Tim Burton and his wonderful movie A nightmare before Christmas.

I was visiting the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for my birthday in October. I was collecting with my camera everything that caught my eyes. And I went to La Recoleta Cemetery, a beautiful turistic attraction of the city. Eva PerÃ³n’s grave is there.

You are gonna see angels of all classes and sizes and at the end of the exhibition, I painted some of them by my self, having in mind the ancient painted photographs and the amazing work of Jan Saudek. The last two are from the Cemetery of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A Brief History of Illustration (Final)

This is the final part of the serie A Brief History of Illustration. I know you are thinking “Define brief…”. Everything has an end. Even “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” is over and we are ending this neverending history here.

This period runs between 1990 until our days.

In the 90’s we saw the rising of Internet. And there is nothing else to say. Everything was changed from the roots. The 90’s are the “Web 1.0″ time, with its awkward websites and a lot of – cough-disgusting-cough- glitter. In this web, we have an actor with no lines to say: the Consumer. The Consumer isn’t able to modify the web. The Consumer barely can say something in the Mailing Lists (Oh my God, it is so 90’s that it hurts). From the year 2000 it appears a new actor in the Internet, the Prosumer. The prosumer is able to create everything he wants: sound, image, motion and text and mixs them all together. It is the Golden Age for young illustrators. There is no need of large amounts of money, because all you need is a blog or a website (with a little money for the dot com’s address), to show off your artwork. This is the “Web 2.0″ time.

Now we are in the Ubiquitous Internet or the Semantic Web.

Ubiquitous is not a magic spell in latin, of course.

Ubiquitous |yo? bikw?t?s|: present, appearing, or found everywhere.

This period saw the Gulf War, The Kosovo Affair and The Irak War. Too many wars in twenty years.

The 90’s were the scenario for the Postmodern Art. The Postmodern style came from sources in the 50’s. Some philosophers seriously believe there isn’t such thing as Postmodernism.

There are some industries of Illustration which have survived through the decades, for example, Disney and DC Comics. They are now merged. Their influence have caused a very well known movies inspired in the comics: Hulk, X-Men, Sin City, Hell Boy, 300, and at last but no least, Green Lantern.

I would like to review some of the newest illustrators. In fact, they are my favorites and they are my contacts at Behance (http://www.behance.net/), a really nice place to find inspiration and good artists. Oh, what a coincidenceÂ¡ I am there too.

A Brief History of Illustration (Part IV)

We are almost finishing this Brief History of Illustration.

In this part we are gonna run through 30 years of history beginning with the Psychodelia of the 70’s to finish with the tech 90’s and the first steps of Internet. This is the end of the world as we knew it.

The main facts of this period are:

1.- Punk style.

2.- Science-Fiction.

3.- The development of a growing market for magazines fosters the opportunities for new and young illustrators. Some of them are working for the Movies Industry creating amazing posters.

4.- In the print history we have: Laser Printer (1969), Dot Matrix Printer (1970), Inkjet Printer (1976), Fine Art Digital Photo Printers(1991) and 3D Printing (1993).

4.- The growing industry of the Advertising.

5.- Artistic influences of the period: Performance Art, Photorealism, Post-Modernism, Techno-Impressionism

In this chapter we are going to see the famous movie poster creator Chris Foss, the psychodelic Gerald Scarfe, the irreverent Ian Pollock, the beautiful simplicity which charmed Woody Allen in the illustrator Jean Michel Folon, the popup books of Jan Piekowski, the tenderness of Maurice Sendak and, finally, the iconic Phillip Castle with the famous red tongue of Rolling Stones and the violence of the movie Clockwork Orange.
