Christian Ward, if you still does not know him ( OMG, it is almost imposible), is a UK based illustrator. According to the Christian Ward website: “…was born 30 years ago and has been pretty much drawing ever since. Along the way, he has developed a fetish for drawing mysterious femme fatales, psychedelic mind clouds and men in capes trying to look dangerous”

He participated at the las Totoro Forest Project, an exhibition organized by Pixar and Studio Ghibli. Read my article about Hayao Miyazaki to learn more about Studio Ghibli.

According to the brazilian version of the magazine Computer Arts (year 2, march 2009) and if my portuguese is still there, he declares that: “ The artists I admire and follow are the czech Mucha and the french cartoonist Moebius”. Please, check my article about the history of illustration which includes Mucha and see some illustrations of Moebius here. “ I adore the energy of Paul Pode and the design sensation of James Jean. I am a big fan of the japanese animation studio 4oC”, states in the same magazine.

About the materials in his artwork the website says: “…and is currently favoring sharp pencils, Promarker markers and Photoshop CS.”

About his topics, we can find skaters, actors (Daniel Craig, Jake Gyllenhall), women with a art noveau look or with a contemporary style, portraits, colourished spaces and doodlish drawings putting into our memory the art of the 60’s and fantastic scenes that resemble some manga (japanese cartoons).

The general impression is he is trying to show through transparent colors and the use of minimal lines how can we get the whole idea of a thing with small elements. This economy of elements is a characteristic of the graffiti and the japanese drawings as well.

Finally, he illustrated the past year his first cartoon: “Brothers Gemini”.
